First Timer?

So what's your motivation? Why scuba? Maybe you did a bit of snorkelling on your hols or are even on a maritime course. Could be you are into fish or have romantic ideas of treasure ships. You could even have been dragged along simply because your friend wants to do it :-) Well whatever the reason this might possibly be one of the most dramatic experiences of your life.

Napoleon Wrasse - Red Sea 04

With few exceptions, as a sport scuba diving is unique. Why? Because what other sport puts you in an element that we are not supposed to be in! That is very much the attraction, but it’s also the reason we train. So you need to get wet, do a try-dive so you can get a feel for what its like and make that do I - don’t I decision.

In the Solent - 05

There will be loads of other questions and I've answered a couple of biggies on the right, but that first step is the try-dive. After that one night the structure of the club and scuba itself becomes very clear. As Nike says, "Just do it"

Class of 04 - Lanzarote

We have checkouts or "try-dives" at regular times thoughout the year, with the busiest in October just after freshers and the start of the new term.

Meet in HCO33 at 6.50pm Tuesday evenings.

If you want to add your name to the freshers try-dive list in October go here.

Training

Although SUCS is a multi-agency club, we do need a bit of common ground at the start, so initial training is with BSAC (British Sub Aqua Club) and that means the entry level of Ocean Diver.

The course is modular, allowing for a steady progression over a number of weeks and enough flexibility if you miss the odd session. Theory elements are married with pool time so that in-water skills are honed prior to the open water elements.

These can either be completed in one go on our Lanzarote training trip in January or done over a couple of weekends in March, just in time for the coming summer.

Although this UK based syllabus is inclusive of skills necessary for our local types of diving conditions, the resultant grade is Internationally recognised to a maximum depth of 20m.

Costs

Well there is no getting round it, diving is not exactly cheap, but as a student club, we go out of our way to make it as painless as possible.

There are two main areas of expenditure:. 1) The initial annual membership fee. ...... 2) Boat and trip fees.

Now you might be wondering where are the pool fees or equipment costs in all that lot? Well there aren’t any! As part of the deal, we want you to spend your dosh on what matters most, going diving and getting more experience. So we provide EVERYTHING, that's right all equipment for FREE!!!!!!!!!!!

On joining we give you, I'll say that again GIVE YOU a mask, fin and snorkel set. That's yours to keep as part of your membership. So straight away we don’t have weeks of faffing around with second-hand masks etc.

Then its onto the expensive stuff and before you even think it, NO; you are not getting £1k worth of dive gear for free! But you can borrow it :-)

Drysuits, semi-drys, regs, BC's, cylinders, torches, ponies, computers, DSMB’s, twinsets, stages ...........the list goes on. (NB: All kit has been purchased on the principle, that its as good as or better than what we would use ourselves).

Bottom line is that once you've joined and paid that initial fee, the next expenditure is when you actually go diving. Our mission statement if you like, is to take away the need for expensive kit purchases, so that you can spend all your dosh on actually doing it!
