So what do YOU want to do?

First, we dont care what agency

or diver grade you are.

You ARE a diver!

We dont care if you are an Instructor that only wants to dive or a student that sees us as a cheap way of getting a dive ticket.

Maybe you are a doing a Oceanography Course and want to get that CMAS 3*/HSE scientific rating.

Grid Search

Just a warm-water diver who wants to dive on hols or a fish prodder that is into marine archeology.

You might even be planning a gap year and want a Divemaster ticket to earn some dosh.

Divemaster at Work

Well whatever it is the whole ethos of SUCS is that whatever you want, we will try and do it. Might take a bit of scheduling, but the club has extensive contacts throughout the dive industry and can facilitate a whole range of options.

Right now we dont know where you are at in your diving career. There is a sort of timeline in the right column of what is available, but dont forget that with the exception of our Sport Diver benchmark, all training is optional, just come diving.

So the best way to start is to ask and that means you need to come along to HCO33 just before

6.50 pm on Tuesdays and have a chat.

Or if you prefer email me.

As long as I'm not diving!

In the meantime you might want to take a look at the diary on the home page and maybe boats booked for next year. Remember that these are bookings and actual sites have yet to be choosen, so if you have wreck you really want to visit, now is your chance.

On the equipment side, it's available free, including drysuits for any club trip sancioned trip. Usually handed out from Tues to Tues.

But the best advert for all the above is those that have been there and done it themselves.

So just ask!

tyBasic Diver Training - Why BSAC?

What do we call basic? Well our UK patch is diving in the Solent and with that blob of land called the IOW stuck just off the coast, we have shall we say an interesting tidal dive area. Just take a look at any chart and almost all the wrecks are over 20m, with a lot around the 30m mark. Now even with a decent SAC a 12lt (or even 15lt) wont give you much more than 20-25 min bottom time. To get anything decent, we are going to edge or go into deco, that also means suitable redundancy.

So bearing in mind we are a student club and only have you for 3 years at Uni, we need to get you to a diver grade that has a 35m rating (at least), is deco and includes skills like rescue/DSMB.

BSAC Sport Diver

Looking at all the syllabi and considering that it was designed for exactly the conditions we have, our benchmark or minimum grade is BSAC Sport Diver.

BSAC/TDI Advanced Nitrox

So if you are not Sports or an equivilent we need to get you there. With 80% of our diving in the 35m range, this level will cover most of what we do. Past that, if you dont want to, then you dont need to go further, just go diving. However at these depths having a gas ticket really extends your non-deco time, so Nitrox is a real advantage.

BSAC Dive Leader

But, say you want to do the Salsette at 45m or maybe something a little deeper? Well that means doing Dive Leader and extending the depth to 50m.

BSAC/TDI/PSA Extended Range

Problem now is that if we are looking at deeper wrecks involving penetration and stages etc. then we really ought to do a course with skills to match, so its onto extended range.

Trimix

By the time your are doing this sort of technical diving many will say "why on earth are you doing deepair?" We tend to agree with that, so if the dives frequently go past 40-45m then you should be thinking Trimix.

SCR & CCR

But of course that costs a lot of dosh and training doesnt come cheap, so how about going the whole hog, coming off OC and going CCR?

DIR? No thanks!

Although we are heavily into all forms of diving we are not DIR compliant. This doesnt mean we disagree with some of the principles of DIR, just that its inflexability is unworkable in our club enviroment.

Scroll Back to the start of Dive Leader and miss out the tech stuff.

BSAC Assistant Instructor (AI)

Sports Diver is the entry level for those wising to go on the BSAC Instructor Foundation Course, gaining AI status. Because we have a lot of students, you get a lot of practice :-)

PADI Divemaster Internship

Once you've done Dive Leader you could fly off to sunny climes and do a summer Internship. All that pool/student training sure comes in handy now.

BSAC Open Water Instructor (OWI)

Or you could stay at home and go onto the main Instructor exams.

PADI Instructor Training Course (ITC)

Nah, let's stay in the warm and do the PADI IFC. All that BSAC + PADI training = a very well rounded diver/Instructor. Plenty of skills and an Instuctor that can teach both agencies, both here and abroad!

Whew! Confused? Well yep I expect you are. So many options and so many possibilities.

Just get in touch, it's easier :-)
